From Ancient Herb-Lore to a Named Science
Botany's story begins with the word itself: "Botany" comes from the Greek botane (grass, fodder, herb), filtered through the French botanique into English — a reminder that the subject started as practical knowledge about grazing and useful plants, long before it became a formal science.
Ancient India: Parasara
One of the earliest known systematic plant-scholars was Parasara, an ancient Indian sage credited with two treatises: Vrikshayurveda, describing the life, growth, and diseases of trees and plants, and Krishi-Parasara, covering agricultural cultivation practice. These texts show that organised, written plant knowledge existed in India independently of, and well before, the Western tradition that later coined the word "Botany."
Theophrastus, the "Father of Botany"
In ancient Greece, Theophrastus (a student of Aristotle, c. 300 BCE) is credited as the "Father of Botany" for being the first to systematically describe and classify plants as trees, shrubs, and herbs based on their form, rather than only their medicinal use. His major surviving work, Historia Plantarum ("Enquiry into Plants"), is regarded as the founding text of the discipline.
Herbalists
Herbalists were practitioners across many centuries who studied and used plants specifically for their curative, medicinal properties, building up experience-based knowledge of which plants treated which ailments. This tradition became an important early root of medicinal botany.

Theophrastus is called the Father of Botany; his best-known book is Historia Plantarum ("Enquiry into Plants").
Botany, the scientific study of plants, has a long recorded history. Among the earliest scholars to study plants systematically was Theophrastus (c. 372–287 BCE), a Greek philosopher and a student of Aristotle.
Because he was the first to describe, name and classify a large number of plants and to record their form, structure, habits and uses in an organised way, he is honoured as the "Father of Botany."

- CBSE 2026Set ANNUAL2 marksQ.Why is Mendel considered as the Father of Genetics?
›Reveal solutionSolution
Mendel is the Father of Genetics because his experiments on the garden pea first revealed the basic laws by which characters are inherited from parents to offspring.
Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884) carried out planned hybridisation experiments on the garden pea (Pisum sativum) over several years. His work was scientific and pioneering for the following reasons:
- He selected clearly contrasting, easily observable characters (e.g. tall vs dwarf, round vs wrinkled seeds).
- He used pure-breeding lines and made controlled crosses, following the characters over successive generations.
- He counted and analysed the offspring in large numbers, applying mathematics/statistics to biology for the first time.
- From his results he proposed the concept of hereditary 'factors' (now called genes) and framed the laws of inheritance - the Law of Dominance, the Law of Segregation, and the Law of Independent Assortment. …
- CBSE 2025Set ANNUAL2 marksQ.Why is Mandel considered as the father of genetics?
›Reveal solutionSolution
Mendel is the father of Genetics because he discovered the basic laws of inheritance through careful, statistically-analysed breeding experiments on garden pea.
Gregor Johann Mendel carried out planned hybridization experiments on garden pea (Pisum sativum) for about seven years.
- He selected pea because of its clear contrasting characters, short life span and self-pollinating nature.
- He studied inheritance of characters one at a time (monohybrid) and two at a time (dihybrid), and analysed the offspring numerically (applying statistics to biology for the first time).
- From his results he proposed the Law of Dominance, the Law of Segregation (purity of gametes) and the Law of Independent Assortment. …
- CBSE 2024Set ANNUAL2 marksQ.Who are Herbalists? What are the books written by them?
›Reveal solutionSolution
Herbalists were early practitioners of medicine who possessed practical knowledge of local medicinal plants, and their accumulated knowledge was documented in reference books known as Materia Medica.
Before modern pharmacology, communities everywhere relied on local practitioners who knew which plants around them could treat particular ailments. Such practitioners, called Herbalists, learnt this knowledge largely through experience and oral tradition passed down generations.
- Their practical knowledge of medicinal plants was eventually compiled and written down.
- These written compilations, describing plants and their medicinal uses, are called Materia Medica. …

›Reveal solutionSolution
Mendel earned the title "father of Genetics" by being the first to work out the laws of inheritance through careful, statistically-analysed breeding experiments on garden pea.
Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884), an Austrian monk, carried out planned hybridization experiments on the garden pea (Pisum sativum) for about seven years.
Why he is honoured as the father of Genetics:
- He chose pea because it has clear-cut contrasting characters (tall/dwarf, round/wrinkled seeds etc.), a short life cycle and is naturally self-pollinating.
- He studied one character at a time (monohybrid) and two characters together (dihybrid), and counted the offspring, applying mathematics/statistics to biology for the first time.
- From his results he proposed the fundamental principles of heredity - the Law of Dominance, the Law of Segregation (purity of gametes) and the Law of Independent Assortment. …
- CBSE 2020Set ANNUAL2 marksQ.Name the books written by Parasara and mention the important aspects discussed in those books.
›Reveal solutionSolution
Parashara, an ancient Indian scholar, authored the Vrikshayurveda ('the science of plant life'), among the earliest known systematic treatments of plants in Indian tradition.
Books written by Parashara: The chief work attributed to Parashara is the Vrikshayurveda (literally, 'the Ayurveda/science of trees and plants'), believed to date to around the early centuries CE. He is regarded as one of the earliest Indian plant scientists/taxonomists.
Important aspects discussed:
- A classification of plants into major groups based on external (morphological) features — broad categories resembling what we would now call natural groupings, such as trees (Vriksha), shrubs (Gulma), creepers/climbers (Lata), grasses, etc.
- Descriptions of plant structure/anatomy, including roots, stems, leaves and flowers.
- Notes on plant cultivation practices — soil requirements, seed treatment, irrigation, and manuring. …
- CBSE 2019Set ANNUAL2 marksQ.Explain how the term Botany has emerged.
›Reveal solutionSolution
'Botany' derives from the Greek 'botane' (pasture/fodder plant), reflecting the earliest human interest in plants as animal feed, and later evolved through Latin/French into the modern English term.
The term Botany traces back to the Greek word 'botane', meaning 'pasture', 'grass', or 'fodder'. In very early human history, before agriculture and medicine developed as separate concerns, people's practical interest in plants was chiefly as grazing material for their animals and as herbs.
