Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884) carried out planned hybridisation experiments on the garden pea (Pisum sativum) over several years. His work was scientific and pioneering for the following reasons:
- He selected clearly contrasting, easily observable characters (e.g. tall vs dwarf, round vs wrinkled seeds).
- He used pure-breeding lines and made controlled crosses, following the characters over successive generations.
- He counted and analysed the offspring in large numbers, applying mathematics/statistics to biology for the first time.
- From his results he proposed the concept of hereditary 'factors' (now called genes) and framed the laws of inheritance - the Law of Dominance, the Law of Segregation, and the Law of Independent Assortment. …
