A parthenocarpic fruit forms without fertilisation and is seedless; such fruits (banana, grapes) are valued because they are seedless and can be produced using growth hormones.

Meaning:

  • Normally, after fertilisation the ovary develops into a fruit and the ovules into seeds.
  • In parthenocarpy, the ovary develops into a fruit WITHOUT fertilisation. Such a fruit is called a parthenocarpic fruit and it is naturally SEEDLESS.
  • Examples: banana, grapes, pineapple and some varieties of orange.
  • Parthenocarpy may be natural or artificially induced by applying growth hormones (auxins, gibberellins) to unpollinated flowers.
