Oxides of sulphur (SO2, SO3) and oxides of nitrogen (NO, NO2) cause acid rain by forming H2SO4 and HNO3 in rain water.

Acid rain refers to rain water whose pH has fallen below the normal value (about 5.6) because it contains dissolved acids.

The pollutant gases responsible are:

  • Oxides of sulphur: SO2 and SO3, produced mainly by the burning of sulphur-containing fossil fuels (coal, petroleum) and by smelting of metal sulphide ores.
  • Oxides of nitrogen: NO and NO2, produced during combustion at high temperatures (in vehicle engines and power plants).

In the atmosphere these oxides react with water vapour and oxygen:

SO2 + H2O -> H2SO3; 2SO2 + O2 -> 2SO3; SO3 + H2O -> H2SO4 …
