Chain (skeletal) isomers of C4H10 differ in the arrangement of the carbon skeleton: a straight chain (n-butane) and a branched chain (isobutane).

Chain isomerism occurs when compounds have the same molecular formula but differ in the arrangement (branching) of the carbon skeleton.

For C4H10C_4H_{10}, two chain isomers are possible:

1. n-Butane (straight chain):

CH3 ⁣− ⁣CH2 ⁣− ⁣CH2 ⁣− ⁣CH3CH_3\!-\!CH_2\!-\!CH_2\!-\!CH_3

2. Isobutane / 2-methylpropane (branched chain):

(CH3)3CHi.e.CH3CH3− ⁣C∣H−CH3(CH_3)_3CH \quad\text{i.e.}\quad \begin{array}{c}CH_3\\ CH_3-\!\overset{|}{C}H-CH_3\end{array}

Here one carbon (C-2) bears a methyl branch, giving a branched three-carbon chain with one methyl substituent.
