Step 1 - Structure

In diamond, each carbon atom is sp3sp^3 hybridised and forms four strong sigma C-C bonds to four neighbouring carbon atoms arranged tetrahedrally, and this pattern repeats throughout the crystal, producing one giant three-dimensional network - not discrete molecules.

Step 2 - What melting requires

Melting such a lattice requires breaking a very large number of strong covalent C-C bonds (bond enthalpy about 347 kJ/mol per bond) rather than merely overcoming weak intermolecular forces, as in typical molecular covalent solids like I2\text{I}_2 or solid CO2\text{CO}_2.
