Step 1 - Mild heating (about 370 K)

Orthoboric acid loses one molecule of water per unit to give metaboric acid:

H3BO3→Δ, ∼370KHBO2+H2O\text{H}_3\text{BO}_3 \xrightarrow{\Delta,\ \sim370\text{K}} \text{HBO}_2 + \text{H}_2\text{O}

Step 2 - Further heating

Metaboric acid condenses further, losing more water to give tetraboric acid as an intermediate:

4HBO2→ΔH2B4O7+H2O4\text{HBO}_2 \xrightarrow{\Delta} \text{H}_2\text{B}_4\text{O}_7 + \text{H}_2\text{O}

Step 3 - Strong (red) heat

On continued strong heating (red heat), all the remaining water is driven off and the residue is boron trioxide (boric oxide): …
