Carbon is sp2 in CO3^2-, sp3 in diamond, sp2 in graphite and sp2 in fullerene.

The hybridisation of a carbon atom is found from the number of sigma bonds (and lone pairs) around it.

a) Carbonate ion, CO3^2-:

The carbon is bonded to three oxygen atoms (three sigma bonds, no lone pair) and the ion is trigonal planar. Hence carbon is sp2 hybridised (the remaining p orbital is involved in the delocalised pi bonding).

b) Diamond:

Each carbon is bonded to four other carbon atoms by single (sigma) bonds in a tetrahedral three-dimensional network. Hence carbon is sp3 hybridised.

c) Graphite: …
