Diamond is a giant covalent (network) solid in which each carbon is bonded to four others; melting needs breaking many strong C-C bonds, so its melting point is very high.

Diamond is a covalent (network) solid. In it, each carbon atom is sp3 hybridised and is covalently bonded to four other carbon atoms arranged tetrahedrally. This bonding continues throughout the crystal, so the entire diamond is effectively one giant three-dimensional molecule held together by a continuous network of strong C-C covalent bonds.

To melt diamond, a very large number of these strong covalent bonds must be broken. Since C-C covalent bonds are very strong and there are enormous numbers of them, an extremely large amount of energy (a very high temperature) is needed.
