Burning magnesium in air gives magnesium oxide (MgO) as the main product, plus a little magnesium nitride (Mg3N2), with a brilliant white flame.

Magnesium is a very reactive metal, and on ignition it burns with an intense, dazzling white flame. In air it reacts with both oxygen and nitrogen:

  1. Reaction with oxygen (main reaction):

    2 Mg + O2 -> 2 MgO (magnesium oxide, a white powder)

  2. Reaction with nitrogen (side reaction):

    3 Mg + N2 -> Mg3N2 (magnesium nitride, greenish-yellow)
