Burning magnesium in air gives mainly white magnesium oxide (MgO) and some magnesium nitride (Mg3N2), releasing a bright white light.

Magnesium is a light, reactive alkaline earth (group-2) metal. When ignited in air it burns with an intense, dazzling white flame.

Reaction with oxygen (main reaction): Most of the magnesium combines with the oxygen of the air to form magnesium oxide, a white powder.

2Mg + O2 -> 2MgO

Reaction with nitrogen: Because magnesium is reactive enough to combine even with the relatively inert nitrogen of the air, a part of it forms magnesium nitride, a greenish-yellow solid.

3Mg + N2 -> Mg3N2
