The measurable properties of a system are divided into two types depending on whether they change with the amount of matter present.
- Extensive properties: Properties that depend on the quantity (amount) of matter present in the system.
-
If the amount of substance is doubled, the value of the property is also doubled.
-
They are additive: the value for the whole system is the sum of the values for its parts.
-
Examples: mass, volume, number of moles, internal energy (U), enthalpy (H), entropy (S), Gibbs energy (G), heat capacity.
- Intensive properties: Properties that do not depend on the quantity of matter present; they depend only on the nature of the substance.
- Their value remains the same however much or little of the substance is taken, and they are not additive. …
