Extensive properties depend on the quantity of matter (mass, volume, enthalpy); intensive properties do not (temperature, pressure, density).

The measurable properties of a system are of two kinds:

Extensive properties: These properties depend on the amount (quantity) of matter present in the system. If the system is divided into parts, an extensive property changes. They are additive.

  • Examples: mass, volume, number of moles, internal energy (U), enthalpy (H), entropy (S), Gibbs energy (G), heat capacity.

Intensive properties: These properties are independent of the amount of matter present. They do not change when the system is divided into parts; they remain the same for every part.

  • Examples: temperature, pressure, density, molar volume, refractive index, viscosity, surface tension, boiling point, melting point, concentration. …
