Q.Though the statement quoted above may be disputed, most physicists do have a feeling that the great laws of physics are at once simple and beautiful. Some of the notable physicists, besides Dirac, who have articulated this feeling, are : Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, Chandrasekhar and Feynman. You are urged to make special efforts to get access to the general books and writings by these and other great masters of physics. (See the Bibliography at the end of this book.) Their writings are truly inspiring !

This question builds on the previous one about Dirac's remark, asking you to reflect on the broader feeling — shared by many leading physicists beyond Dirac — that the deepest laws of nature are marked by simplicity and elegance:

  • Why simplicity is so striking: laws such as Newton's law of gravitation, the conservation of energy/momentum/charge, or Maxwell's compact set of four equations, govern an enormous diversity of phenomena (falling apples and orbiting planets; chemical reactions and biological processes; radio waves and visible light) using only a handful of simple mathematical relationships. Physicists often describe the experience of encountering such a law as similar to an aesthetic or even emotional response, not merely an intellectual one.
  • Named physicists and their views: Einstein spoke of the 'cosmic religious feeling' evoked by nature's rational order; Bohr and Heisenberg, pioneers of quantum mechanics, wrote extensively (Bohr on complementarity, Heisenberg in books like 'Physics and Philosophy') about the philosophical and aesthetic dimensions of physical law; Chandrasekhar gave a well-known set of lectures and writings specifically on the theme of beauty and truth in science ('Truth and Beauty: Aesthetics and Motivations in Science'); Feynman, famous for his accessible popular writing (e.g., 'The Character of Physical Law', 'Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!'), repeatedly conveyed his sense of wonder at the elegance underlying nature's rules. …
