Q.Textbooks on science may give you a wrong impression that studying science is dry and all too serious and that scientists are absent-minded introverts who never laugh or grin. This image of science and scientists is patently false. Scientists, like any other group of humans, have their share of humorists, and many have led their lives with a great sense of fun and adventure, even as they seriously pursued their scientific work. Two great physicists of this genre are Gamow and Feynman. You will enjoy reading their books listed in the Bibliography.

Textbooks, by focusing narrowly on results and formulas, can unintentionally create the false impression that science is a humourless, purely serious pursuit and that scientists themselves are dry, socially withdrawn figures. The lives of many real scientists tell a very different story:

  • George Gamow: a leading theoretical physicist (contributor to Big Bang cosmology and the theory of alpha decay) who was also a gifted popular-science writer known for wit and imaginative storytelling — his 'Mr. Tompkins' book series playfully explores relativity and quantum physics through a whimsical fictional character, showing that deep scientific ideas can be conveyed with humour and creativity.
  • Richard Feynman: one of the most celebrated physicists of the twentieth century (Nobel laureate for quantum electrodynamics), equally famous for his irreverent sense of humour, love of practical jokes, bongo drumming, lock-picking as a hobby, and adventurous curiosity about everything from biology to art — vividly recounted in his best-selling memoir 'Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!' and 'What Do You Care What Other People Think?'. Feynman explicitly modelled that rigorous, world-changing physics and a playful, fun-loving personality are entirely compatible. …
