While gross anatomy studies the structure of organs and organ systems visible to the naked eye, histology goes a level deeper, examining tissue sections under a microscope to understand how individual cells are organised, layered and specialised to perform the tissue's function — for example, how epithelial cells are packed into a lining layer, or how muscle fibres are arranged within a muscle. This microscopic-level information is often diagnostic: two organs that look grossly similar may show very different tissue organisation, and this difference can be an important taxonomic character used to distinguish related groups of animals. …
