The Greenhouse Effect is the trapping of the Earth's outgoing heat by atmospheric greenhouse gases (CO2, methane, water vapour, etc.), which keeps the Earth warm; its increase causes global warming.

Explanation:

  • The Earth's atmosphere contains certain gases called GREENHOUSE GASES - mainly carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), water vapour, nitrous oxide (N2O) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
  • Sunlight (short-wave solar radiation) passes through the atmosphere and warms the Earth's surface. The heated surface then radiates heat back as long-wave (infrared) radiation.
  • The greenhouse gases ABSORB much of this outgoing infrared radiation and re-radiate part of it back to the Earth's surface, instead of letting it escape into space.
  • This traps heat in the lower atmosphere and keeps the Earth WARM - just as the glass panes of a greenhouse allow sunlight in but prevent heat from escaping. Hence it is called the Greenhouse Effect. …
