Genetic diversity is variety at the level of genes within a species, arising both within a population and between geographically distinct populations of the same species.

What is genetic diversity?

Genetic diversity is one of the three recognized levels of biodiversity (the others being species diversity and ecological/ecosystem diversity). It refers to the variation in genes (alleles) and genetic makeup found among individual organisms belonging to the same species, or among different populations of that species. This variation is the raw material for evolution by natural selection, and it also underlies the many races, strains, breeds and varieties seen within a single species. For instance, India alone has more than 50,000 genetically different strains/varieties of rice and about 1,000 varieties of mango, all belonging to the same species.

Different types of genetic diversity:

  1. Diversity within a population — individuals of the same population differ from one another in their alleles (e.g., variation in blood group, height, disease resistance among humans), due to mutation and sexual recombination. …
