Insurance divides into life insurance and general insurance, with general insurance further split by the nature of risk covered.

Life insurance covers the risk attached to human life itself — premature death, or living long enough to outlast one's savings. The insurer pays a fixed, pre-agreed sum assured on the insured's death, or on survival to the end of the policy term, whichever occurs first, in exchange for premiums paid over the policy's duration.

General insurance covers financial loss to property and other insurable interests, and it strictly follows the principle of indemnity — paying only the actual loss suffered. Its main branches are:
