Principles of Management (Henri Fayol)
Principles of management are general statements that guide managerial thinking and action. They are flexible, apply to all types of organisations, and are mainly behavioural. Henri Fayol identified fourteen principles:
- Division of work — dividing work into small specialised tasks so that specialisation raises efficiency.
- Authority and responsibility — managers must have authority to give orders, and authority should go hand in hand with corresponding responsibility.
- Discipline — obedience to rules and agreements is essential for smooth working.
- Unity of command — each employee should receive orders from only one superior to avoid confusion.
- Unity of direction — one head and one plan for a group of activities having the same objective.
- Subordination of individual interest to general interest — the interest of the organisation must prevail over personal interest.
- Remuneration — pay to employees should be fair and satisfactory to both employees and the organisation.
- Centralisation and decentralisation — there should be a proper balance between concentration and dispersal of authority according to the situation.
- Scalar chain — a clear line of authority from top to bottom; the 'gang plank' allows direct contact in emergencies.
- Order — a place for everything and everything in its place; proper arrangement of men and materials.
- Equity — managers should be fair and kind to subordinates.
- Stability of tenure of personnel — employees should be given reasonable job security to avoid high turnover. …
