Five Principles of Management given by Henri Fayol
-
Division of Work — Work should be divided into small tasks and assigned to specialised persons. Specialisation improves speed, accuracy and efficiency because each person concentrates on a specific job.
-
Authority and Responsibility — A manager must have the authority (right to give orders and take decisions) needed to carry out his responsibilities. Authority and responsibility should go together and be balanced; authority without responsibility leads to misuse, and responsibility without authority makes work impossible.
-
Discipline — Obedience to rules, respect for authority and adherence to agreements between the organisation and its employees are essential. Discipline is maintained through good supervision, clear rules and fair penalties.
-
Unity of Command — Each employee should receive orders from one superior only. Receiving instructions from more than one boss creates confusion, conflict and divided loyalty.
