Welfare Schemes, Human Development and Challenges
A distinctive feature of the Telangana economy has been the scale of its welfare and flagship schemes, aimed at improving basic living conditions and human development. Key programmes include:
| Scheme | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Mission Bhagiratha | Supplying safe piped drinking water to households across villages and towns through a large network of pipelines. |
| Aasara pensions | Social-security pensions for vulnerable groups — the elderly, widows, persons with disabilities, and certain occupational groups such as beedi and toddy workers. |
| KCR Kit (MCH Kit) | Maternal and child-health support — financial assistance and a kit of essential items for mothers who deliver in government hospitals, to encourage institutional deliveries. |
| Kalyana Lakshmi / Shaadi Mubarak | Marriage-assistance to poor families (about ₹1,00,116) to meet wedding expenses of a daughter and to discourage child marriage. |
| 2BHK Dignity Housing | Providing pucca two-bedroom houses free of cost to eligible poor families in place of unsafe or inadequate dwellings. |
These schemes reflect a strategy of using state spending to raise human development — health, nutrition, drinking water and shelter — alongside growth.
Demographics and human development: Telangana's population is spread between a highly urbanised, prosperous Hyderabad metropolitan region and a much more rural, agrarian hinterland. Human-development indicators such as literacy, health access and household amenities have improved since formation, particularly with drinking-water and housing programmes, though outcomes still vary widely across districts.
Key challenges remain, and TS Inter II year Economics expects students to be able to discuss them:
- Regional and inter-district imbalance — growth is heavily concentrated in and around Hyderabad, while several interior districts lag behind.
- Water and groundwater stress — despite large irrigation projects, dependence on groundwater and the cost of pumping and lifting water remain concerns, and over-extraction can lower water tables. …
