By flagellar number and arrangement, bacteria are: atrichous (none), monotrichous (one at a pole), amphitrichous (one/tuft at both poles), lophotrichous/cephalotrichous (tuft at a pole) and peritrichous (all over the surface).

Many bacteria possess flagella for locomotion. The number and arrangement (distribution) of these flagella differ from one type of bacterium to another, and this is used as a basis of classification:

  1. Atrichous: bacteria with no flagella (non-motile). Example: Lactobacillus.

  2. Monotrichous: a single flagellum present at one pole (end) of the cell. Example: Vibrio cholerae.

  3. Amphitrichous: a single flagellum (or a tuft) present at each of the two opposite poles.
