Photorespiration is a wasteful, light-driven process in C₃ plants where RuBisCO fixes O₂ instead of CO₂, forming glycolate and releasing CO₂ without producing sugar or ATP.

What it is: Photorespiration is the light-dependent uptake of O₂ with release of CO₂ that occurs in C₃ plants. It happens because the enzyme RuBisCO has affinity for both CO₂ and O₂ at its active site. This topic is from the TS Intermediate photosynthesis unit, which follows the NCERT/CBSE curriculum.

Why it occurs: When the O₂:CO₂ ratio is high (e.g. hot, dry conditions with stomata closed), RuBisCO acts as an oxygenase. Instead of forming two molecules of 3-carbon PGA, it binds O₂ to RuBP, forming one molecule of PGA (3-C) and one molecule of phosphoglycolate (2-C).

Pathway (glycolate/C₂ cycle): The phosphoglycolate is processed through the chloroplast, peroxisome and mitochondrion, in the course of which CO₂ is released.
