In incomplete dominance, the heterozygote's phenotype blends between the two homozygous parental phenotypes, so the phenotypic ratio in F2 matches the genotypic ratio (1:2:1) rather than the usual 3:1.

Definition: Incomplete dominance is a pattern of inheritance in which neither of the two alleles of a gene is completely dominant over the other. As a result, the heterozygous (Rr) offspring shows a phenotype that is intermediate between the two homozygous parental phenotypes, rather than resembling one parent fully.

Example - Mirabilis jalapa (four o'clock plant), flower colour:

  • Parents (P): Red-flowered (RR) x White-flowered (rr)
  • F1: All plants are Rr, with pink flowers (an intermediate blend, not red) - showing that R is not completely dominant over r.
  • On self-pollinating F1 (Rr x Rr), the F2 generation segregates in a genotypic ratio of 1 RR : 2 Rr : 1 rr, which directly corresponds to a phenotypic ratio of 1 Red : 2 Pink : 1 White. …
