Walter Sutton (working with grasshopper cells) and Theodor Boveri (working with sea urchins) independently observed, around 1902, that the behaviour of chromosomes during meiosis parallels the behaviour of Mendelian factors (genes): chromosomes occur in pairs, segregate during meiosis so that each gamete gets one of each pair, and pairs assort independently of other pairs - exactly mirroring Mendel's Law of Segregation and Law of Independent Assortment.
