What is the Green Revolution?

The Green Revolution refers to the period of dramatic increase in agricultural productivity, particularly of staple cereal crops like wheat and rice, that took place mainly during the 1960s and 1970s. It resulted from the combined use of:

  • Increased use of chemical fertilizers (especially nitrogenous fertilizers).
  • Expanded irrigation facilities.
  • Use of pesticides/herbicides for better pest and weed control.
  • Improved farming techniques and mechanization.
