The Green Revolution refers to the period during which food (grain) production, particularly of wheat and rice, was greatly increased. This was achieved by:
- Developing and cultivating high-yielding, disease-resistant crop varieties (semi-dwarf wheat and rice).
- Using improved agricultural practices such as assured irrigation, chemical fertilizers, pesticides and better management.
As a result, India became largely self-sufficient in food grains.
