Analgesics: Analgesics are chemical substances (drugs) used to relieve pain without disturbing the normal senses or level of consciousness of the patient.
Classification:
a) Narcotic (opioid) analgesics: These are drugs that act on the central nervous system, binding to opioid receptors, and relieve severe pain. They also tend to induce sleep (narcosis) and are addictive/habit-forming with prolonged use; in medically prescribed doses they are also used in surgical operations and terminally ill patients.
Example: Morphine (a natural alkaloid obtained from opium; other examples: codeine, heroin).
b) Non-narcotic (non-opioid) analgesics: These drugs relieve mild to moderate pain (such as headache, muscle pain) without acting on opioid receptors, are non-addictive, and many also have antipyretic (fever-reducing) and anti-inflammatory action. …
