Ammonia's nitrogen lone pair lets it act as a monodentate Lewis base ligand, forming coordinate bonds with metal ions to give stable complexes.

Ammonia (NH3) is a good complexing agent (ligand) because the nitrogen atom carries a lone pair of electrons. This lone pair can be donated to a metal ion (which has vacant d-orbitals to accept electron density), forming a coordinate covalent (dative) bond between N and the metal. Because it donates through a single atom (N), ammonia acts as a monodentate ligand, and it can form several such coordinate bonds with the same central metal ion, giving a complex ion.

Example: When excess ammonia solution (NH4OH) is added to an aqueous solution of a copper(II) salt (e.g., CuSO4), the pale blue Cu2+ hydrated ion is converted into a deep (royal) blue complex:

Cu2+ (aq) + 4NH3 (aq) -> [Cu(NH3)4]2+ (aq)
