Deacon's process: 4HCl + O2 --(CuCl2, 723K)--> 2Cl2 + 2H2O; chlorine oxidises H2S to sulphur and thiosulphate to sulphate, and disproportionates in hot conc. NaOH.

Preparation by Deacon's process:

  • A mixture of hydrogen chloride gas and air (oxygen) is passed over a cupric chloride (CuCl2) catalyst at about 723 K. HCl is oxidised to chlorine.
  • 4HCl(g) + O2(g) --(CuCl2, 723K)--> 2Cl2(g) + 2H2O(g)

Reactions of chlorine:

  1. With hot concentrated NaOH (disproportionation to chloride and chlorate):

    3Cl2 + 6NaOH(hot, conc.) -> 5NaCl + NaClO3 + 3H2O

    Here chlorine is simultaneously reduced (to -1 in NaCl) and oxidised (to +5 in NaClO3).

  2. With hydrogen sulphide (chlorine oxidises H2S, liberating sulphur):

    Cl2 + H2S -> 2HCl + S

    Chlorine, being a strong oxidising agent, oxidises the sulphide to sulphur.
