Laboratory chlorine comes from MnO2 + conc. HCl; it disproportionates in cold dilute alkali and oxidizes excess ammonia to nitrogen.

Laboratory preparation of Cl2

Chlorine gas is prepared in the laboratory by heating manganese dioxide (MnO2) with concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl):

MnO2+4HCl(conc.)→ΔMnCl2+Cl2↑+2H2OMnO_2 + 4HCl(conc.) \xrightarrow{\Delta} MnCl_2 + Cl_2\uparrow + 2H_2O

a) Reaction with cold and dilute NaOH

Chlorine undergoes disproportionation (its oxidation state 0 changes to both -1 and +1) with cold, dilute sodium hydroxide to give a mixture of sodium chloride and sodium hypochlorite:

Cl2+2NaOH(cold,dilute)→NaCl+NaOCl+H2OCl_2 + 2NaOH(cold, dilute) \rightarrow NaCl + NaOCl + H_2O

(This solution is used as a bleaching agent, known commercially as 'bleaching solution'.)

b) Reaction with excess NH3 …
