Reactance is the opposition offered by a pure inductor or pure capacitor to AC current; X_L increases with frequency while X_C decreases with frequency.

When an alternating source of angular frequency ω=2πf\omega = 2\pi f is connected to a pure inductor or a pure capacitor, they offer an opposition to the flow of current called reactance (measured in ohms), analogous to resistance but frequency-dependent and involving no power dissipation (average power consumed is zero, since current and voltage differ in phase by π/2\pi/2).

Inductive reactance (XLX_L):

For a pure inductor of inductance LL carrying AC of angular frequency ω\omega, the opposition to current is

XL=ωL=2πfLX_L = \omega L = 2\pi f L

Here the current lags the voltage by 90∘90^\circ. XLX_L increases linearly with frequency — an inductor offers more opposition at higher frequencies and behaves like a short circuit (XL→0X_L \to 0) at zero (DC) frequency.

Capacitive reactance (XCX_C):

For a pure capacitor of capacitance CC carrying AC of angular frequency ω\omega, the opposition to current is …
