Mobile telephony is a form of wireless communication that uses ultra-high-frequency (UHF) radio waves, propagated as space waves in line-of-sight, between the handset and a nearby cell tower.

A mobile phone communicates with the nearest Base Transceiver Station (cell tower) using electromagnetic waves in the UHF range (roughly 800 MHz–2100 MHz for the older 2G/3G/4G bands). Because UHF waves are not reflected by the ionosphere and diffract very little around large obstacles, they travel essentially in straight lines — this mode of propagation is called space-wave (line-of-sight) communication.
