(i) An antenna is a device (usually a conductor or array of conductors) that acts as a transducer between guided electrical signals and free-space electromagnetic waves: at a transmitter it radiates EM waves into space, and at a receiver it intercepts incoming EM waves and converts them back into electrical signals.
(ii) For a ground-based transmitting tower of height h, the maximum line-of-sight distance up to which its signal can be received (over a spherical Earth of radius R) is
d = sqrt(2Rh).
Given h = 80 m and R = 6.4 x 10^6 m:
d = sqrt(2 x 6.4 x 10^6 x 80) = sqrt(1.024 x 10^9) = 3.2 x 10^4 m = 32 km.
