When a high potential difference (of the order of a few kV) is applied across the two electrodes of a discharge tube containing a gas at very low pressure (about mm of Hg), a stream of particles is found to leave the cathode and travel towards the anode. These are called cathode rays, and they were shown by J. J. Thomson to be streams of negatively charged particles — electrons.
Properties of cathode rays:
- They travel in straight lines from the cathode (cast sharp shadows of objects placed in their path).
- They are deflected by electric and magnetic fields, showing they carry negative charge.
- They possess kinetic energy and can do mechanical work (they can turn a small paddle wheel placed in their path).
- They produce heat on striking a target and can produce X-rays when striking a heavy metal target at high speed. …
