Unlike electric field lines, which start and end on isolated charges, magnetic field lines have no isolated 'source' or 'sink' to begin/end on because magnetic monopoles do not exist in nature — so every magnetic field line must close on itself.

Why magnetic field lines are closed loops

Electric field lines originate on positive charges and terminate on negative charges because isolated positive and negative charges (monopoles of electricity) exist.

In magnetism, however, magnetic monopoles do not exist — every magnet, however small, is a dipole with a north and a south pole together; cutting a bar magnet only produces two smaller dipole magnets, never an isolated pole.

This is expressed by Gauss's law for magnetism: the net magnetic flux through any closed surface is always zero,

∮B⃗⋅dA⃗=0\oint \vec{B}\cdot d\vec{A} = 0
