Unlike electric field lines (which can start and end on isolated positive/negative charges), magnetic field lines have no isolated source or sink to start/end on, because magnetic monopoles don't exist - so they must always close on themselves.

Explanation

Magnetic field lines are drawn so that outside a bar magnet they emerge from the North pole and converge into the South pole. If the lines simply stopped at the poles, this would imply the poles are sources/sinks of magnetic field, similar to isolated positive and negative charges being sources/sinks of the electric field.

However, unlike electric charges, an isolated magnetic pole (a magnetic monopole) has never been observed in nature - every magnet, however small (down to the atomic level), is a dipole with both a N pole and a S pole together. Cutting a bar magnet in two does not give you a separate N pole and S pole; it gives two smaller complete magnets, each again with both poles.
