A nuclear reactor sustains and controls a fission chain reaction using fuel, moderator, control rods and coolant to produce steady power; complete mass-energy conversion of 1 microgram gives 9×1079\times10^7 J by E=mc2E=mc^2.

Principle: A nuclear reactor works on the principle of a controlled, self-sustained nuclear fission chain reaction. In fission, a heavy nucleus (like U-235) absorbs a slow (thermal) neutron, splits into two lighter nuclei, releases a large amount of energy, and emits 2–3 fast neutrons. If, on average, exactly one of these emitted neutrons goes on to cause another fission (multiplication factor k=1k = 1), the chain reaction proceeds at a steady, controlled rate, releasing energy continuously rather than explosively.

Main components / working:

  • Fuel: Fissile material such as enriched Uranium-235 (or Plutonium-239), which undergoes fission.
  • Moderator: A material (commonly heavy water or graphite) that slows down the fast neutrons produced in fission to thermal (slow) speeds, since slow neutrons are far more effective at causing further U-235 fission.
  • Control rods: Rods of a strongly neutron-absorbing material (e.g. cadmium or boron), which are inserted into or withdrawn from the reactor core to absorb excess neutrons, keeping the multiplication factor k≈1k \approx 1 and thus controlling the rate of the reaction.
  • Coolant: A fluid (water, heavy water, or liquid sodium) circulated through the core to carry away the heat generated by fission; this heat is used to produce steam, which drives turbines to generate electricity. …
