Sunlight entering a raindrop is refracted, undergoes total internal reflection at the back of the drop, and is refracted again on exiting, with each colour bending by a different amount (dispersion) — producing the coloured arc we see as a rainbow.

Formation of the primary rainbow:

When sunlight (a mixture of all colours) falls on a spherical raindrop:

  1. The light is refracted as it enters the drop at the front surface. Since the refractive index of water is slightly different for different colours (violet bends more than red), the white light begins to split into its constituent colours — this is dispersion.
  2. The dispersed rays undergo total internal reflection once at the back inner surface of the drop.
  3. The rays are refracted again as they exit the front surface of the drop, dispersing further.

After these two refractions and one internal reflection, the light emerges at an angle of about 42° (for red) to 40° (for violet) from the original direction of sunlight. Because millions of raindrops in the sky each send a particular colour to the observer's eye at a particular angle, the observer sees a continuous arc of colours — red on the outer edge (largest angle, about 42°) and violet on the inner edge (about 40°) — this is the primary rainbow.
