A prism splits white light into its component colours because each colour (wavelength) has a slightly different refractive index in glass; this splitting is called dispersion, and violet is deviated the most.

Dispersion of light

When a beam of white light passes through a prism, it splits into a band of seven colours — Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red (VIBGYOR). This phenomenon of splitting of white light into its constituent colours is called dispersion.

Cause: White light is a mixture of waves of different wavelengths. The refractive index nn of the prism material is not the same for all wavelengths — it is slightly higher for shorter wavelengths (violet) and slightly lower for longer wavelengths (red), i.e. nviolet>nredn_{violet} > n_{red}.

The angle of deviation produced by a thin prism of angle AA for a given colour is

δ=(n−1)A\delta = (n-1)A
