The adult human dental formula is 2123/2123, i.e. Incisors 2, Canine 1, Premolars 2, Molars 3 in each half-jaw, giving 32 teeth in all.

Human teeth are of four types - incisors (I), canines (C), premolars (PM) and molars (M) - a condition called heterodont dentition. The number of each type of tooth present in one half of the upper jaw and one half of the lower jaw is written as the dental formula.

For an adult human, in one half of each jaw there are:

  • Incisors (I) = 2
  • Canine (C) = 1
  • Premolars (PM) = 2
  • Molars (M) = 3

So the dental formula is 2123 / 2123.
