Genetic drift is random change in allele frequencies in a small population; the Founder Effect is drift caused when a few founders start a new population with a chance-different gene pool.

Genetic drift (Evolution, NCERT Class 12 Biology) is one of the factors that alter the allele frequencies of a population and hence bring about evolution. Unlike natural selection, which is directional, genetic drift is a random, chance event. Its effect is significant only in small populations, where the loss or spread of an allele by mere chance can markedly change the gene pool in a few generations. When drift is strong, the changed population may become so different that it forms a new species.

Founder Effect — an illustration of genetic drift:

  • Suppose a small number of individuals (founders) leave a large population and colonise a new, isolated place (e.g. an island).
  • By chance, these few founders do not carry the full range of alleles present in the original population, and some alleles may be over- or under-represented among them.
  • The new population therefore starts with a gene pool whose allele frequencies differ from the parent population purely by chance. …
