Genetic drift is random change in allele frequency, important in small populations; the Founder Effect is genetic drift caused when a few individuals start a new population, so the new population's allele frequencies differ markedly from the original.

Genetic drift is defined as the change in the frequency of alleles (genes) in a population caused by random chance events, rather than by natural selection. It occurs in every population but its effect is significant only in small populations, where chance can cause an allele to be lost or become fixed (frequency 1), changing the genetic composition markedly.

Founder Effect (an example of genetic drift):

  • Sometimes, a small number of individuals (the 'founders') migrate away from a large parent population and establish a new colony in a new, isolated area.
  • These few founders carry only a small, random sample of the alleles present in the original population - not a true representation of the whole gene pool.
  • As a result, the allele frequencies of the new (founder) population differ from those of the original population. Some alleles may be over-represented, others absent. …
