Hugo de Vries's mutation theory (from work on Oenothera/evening primrose) holds that new species arise by sudden, large, heritable mutations ('saltation'), not by the slow continuous variations Darwin proposed.

The theory of mutations (mutation theory of evolution) was put forward by Hugo de Vries, based on his experiments on the evening primrose plant (Oenothera lamarckiana).

Main ideas of the theory:

  • Evolution and the formation of new species take place because of mutations - sudden, large, discontinuous changes that appear in the genetic material and are inheritable.
  • De Vries called this large single-step variation 'saltation' (a sudden jump). According to him, a new species can arise in a single generation by such a large mutation.
  • This is in contrast to Darwin's view, in which evolution was said to occur by the accumulation of small, continuous variations over long periods.
  • Mutations are random and directionless (they can be beneficial, harmful or neutral). Favourable mutations may be preserved by natural selection and contribute to the origin of new forms. …
