The human male reproductive system = paired testes in the scrotum + ducts (epididymis, vas deferens, ejaculatory duct, urethra) + glands (seminal vesicles, prostate, bulbourethral) + the penis.

The male reproductive system (Human Reproduction, NCERT Class 12 Biology) is designed to produce, nourish and deliver sperms. Its parts:

1. Testes (primary sex organs): A pair of oval testes lie in a sac, the scrotum, outside the abdomen (which keeps them ~2–2.5 °C below body temperature, needed for sperm formation). Each testis is divided into about 250 compartments (lobules) containing seminiferous tubules, whose walls hold the spermatogonia (form sperms) and supporting Sertoli cells. Between the tubules lie the interstitial (Leydig) cells that secrete the male hormone testosterone.

2. Accessory ducts (path of sperm): From the seminiferous tubules sperms pass through the rete testis → vasa efferentia → epididymis (a coiled tube on the testis where sperms are stored and mature) → vas deferens (ascends into the abdomen) → ejaculatory duct, which joins the urethra. The urethra runs through the penis and carries both urine and semen (at different times).

3. Accessory glands: Their secretions form the fluid part of semen —

  • Seminal vesicles (a pair) — secrete a fructose-rich fluid that nourishes sperms.
  • Prostate gland (single) — adds an alkaline secretion.
  • Bulbourethral (Cowper's) glands (a pair) — secrete a lubricating fluid.

4. External genital organ — the Penis: The copulatory organ, made of erectile tissue; it delivers sperms into the female tract.
