Structure of the pelvic girdle:

The pelvic girdle is formed of two large, irregularly-shaped hip bones, also called coxal bones or os coxae. Each coxal bone is formed by the fusion of three separate bones during development:

  1. Ilium - The uppermost, largest and flattest of the three, forming the broad, wing-like superior part of the hip bone. Its upper margin is the iliac crest.
  2. Ischium - Forms the postero-inferior part of the hip bone; its thickened posterior part, the ischial tuberosity, bears the body's weight while sitting.
  3. Pubis - Forms the antero-inferior part of the hip bone; the two pubic bones (left and right) meet each other in the midline at a joint called the pubic symphysis. …
