The chromosomal theory of sex determination explains that an organism's sex is decided by the combination of sex chromosomes it inherits, and in humans this follows the XX-XY (male heterogametic) pattern.

The chromosomal theory of sex determination states that sex in many organisms is controlled by a specific pair of chromosomes, called sex chromosomes (as opposed to the autosomes, which are the same in both sexes). Different groups of organisms show different patterns:

XX-XY type (found in humans, Drosophila, and most mammals):

  • Females have two similar sex chromosomes: XX (they are said to be homogametic, since all their eggs carry a single type of sex chromosome, X).
  • Males have two dissimilar sex chromosomes: XY (they are heterogametic, since they produce two types of sperm in equal numbers - half bearing the X chromosome and half bearing the Y chromosome).

Mechanism in humans:

  1. During oogenesis, every ovum produced by the female (XX) carries a single X chromosome.
  2. During spermatogenesis, the male (XY) produces two types of sperm in equal proportion - 50% carrying an X chromosome and 50% carrying a Y chromosome.
  3. At fertilisation, the ovum (always X) fuses randomly with either an X-bearing sperm or a Y-bearing sperm:
    • Ovum (X) + X-bearing sperm → XX zygote → develops into a female (daughter).
    • Ovum (X) + Y-bearing sperm → XY zygote → develops into a male (son).
  4. Since sperm of both types are produced in equal numbers and fertilisation is a matter of chance, this explains why the sex ratio of offspring in a population is approximately 1:1 (male : female). …
