Multiple alleles occur when a single gene has more than two allelic forms present in the population, illustrated by the ABO blood group system.

In simple Mendelian inheritance, a gene usually has two alternative forms (alleles), such as the dominant and recessive alleles for a trait, and a diploid individual carries only two of them (one on each homologous chromosome). However, for some genes, more than two allelic forms exist within the population as a whole - such genes are said to show multiple allelism, and the alleles are called multiple alleles.

Even though the population pool may contain three, four or more alleles of the gene, any single diploid individual can still possess only two of these alleles at a time (one from each parent), since it has only two homologous chromosomes carrying that locus.
