An unsecured home router lets strangers use your bandwidth, intercept your data and do illegal things that trace to YOUR connection; protect it with a long, mixed, non-personal password (example: Blue#Mango27!Train) and share it only with household members (parents yes; friends/neighbours no; tutors at most temporary guest access).

Why it is important to secure your wireless router

  • Accountability: everything done on your wifi carries your public IP address. If an outsider uses your network for piracy, threats or fraud, the trail leads to your home.
  • Privacy of your traffic and devices: someone on your network can attempt to intercept unencrypted traffic and probe the laptops, phones, printers and cameras connected to it.
  • Bandwidth and cost: freeloaders slow your Internet and consume your data quota.
  • Router hijack: with default/weak admin credentials, an attacker can change DNS settings and redirect you to fraudulent sites. So: set a strong wifi password (WPA2/WPA3), change the router's default admin password too, and keep its firmware updated.

Rules for a reasonably secure password (as commonly recommended)

  1. Length at least 10–12 characters — length beats cleverness.
  2. Mix uppercase, lowercase, digits and special characters.
  3. No personal information (names, birthdays, phone numbers) and no dictionary words or keyboard patterns (qwerty, 123456).
  4. Unique — never reuse a password across services; change it periodically and after any suspected leak.

An imaginary password for my home router (illustration only — create your own): Blue#Mango27!Train — 18 characters, four unrelated words/symbols/digits, nothing personal, easy for me to remember and hard to guess.

Will I share it?

PersonShare?Justification
a) ParentsYesSame household, joint owners of the connection, fully trusted and equally responsible for its use.
b) FriendsNoTrust is not the only issue — I cannot control whom they pass it to; a casual visit can be served by hotspot/guest network instead.
